Break the impasse and move your relationship on

Marriage and Couples Counselling, Couple Therapy in London W1

relationship counseling and help

If you are finding your relationship isn't going well, you may be realising your relationship won’t change without help. Couples counselling can be effective at moving your relationship on. 80% of couples in a recent national survey found their relationship to be strengthened after therapy. Couples counselling does take time, work, and resolve as you together face up to sometimes difficult emotions.

You may be arguing all the time, about the smallest things, and getting nowhere. Perhaps it’s one major thing, like money, children, infidelity. Or maybe you don't argue at all, you can't seem to find the words to talk about what is bothering you. Perhaps you've been so busy leading your lives it's just crept up on you that you've grown apart, you seem like strangers. Or your lives have changed so much, what you want from your relationship and life has diverged. You may be feeling frustrated and angry, lonely at times, misunderstood, resentful or bored. These emotions you have about your relationship are common. But when you don’t seem to be able to move on, counselling can help. Some people prefer to come on their own to deal with their relationship issues: click on relationship counselling to find out more.

How can marriage and couples counselling make a difference?

Most people coming to me for marriage and couple counselling have reached an impasse. A lot of the work I do with couples is centred on communication and conflict. Helping you to articulate in a new way what is wrong and what you'd like fixed. Helping you both to listen, really hear what your partner is saying. Exploring together how each of you deals with conflict in your relationship. I will help you bring out into the open what you value in your relationship, and what you'd like to see changed. My role shifts as we work through your issues: at times a facilitator, at others a mediator, sometimes an active observer, bringing a different perspective through my experience and expertise.

Is having couples therapy worth the risk?

Many couples hesitate to come to therapy because they fear the exposure - not just with me, but also with each other. And like many couples I see, you may be worried I will take sides. What you will find if we work together is that I will pay equal attention to you both, that I will get to know how you both see and experience your situation. I am interested in both of you as individuals, and how you relate together. I am here not to pass judgement but to help you to support each other to find your way in your relationship.

Marriage and couple counselling allows you to make thoughtful decisions about your relationship, which may include rejuvenating it, but occasionally it may mean making a decision to end it. If that's the case, therapy can help you come to a more amicable resolution.
